Paperboard is widely used as a kind of green packaging material in various products of packaging field. The structure of paperboard is intertwined wood fibers and made from paper pulp. In general, paperboard is anisotropic, elastic-plastic, and with certain ability of deep drawing. However, the paperboard forming parts at present such as cake trays and pizza trays are manufactured by folding or shallow forming, the researches especially on the deep drawing process of paperboard have not been reported yet.In this paper, firstly by comparing different kinds of common paperboards, the PE coated paperboard with basis weight of245g/m2was adopted. According to the national standard on the tensile properties of paper and paperboard, the uniaxial tensile test was conducted and the basic mechanical properties were obtained. Secondly, the forming limit diagram (FLD) of paperboard was established, which includes the forming limit curves at machine, cross, and45°directions. Thirdly, a series of deep drawing experiments were carried out to verify the influences of process conditions on the forming, the effects of process parameters as blank size, paperboard orientation, drawing depth, moisture content were discussed. Finally, finite element software ABAQUS with orthotropic elastic-plastic models was used to simulate the forming processes of FLD experiment and deep drawing of rectangular boxes. Combined with the FLD, the numerical simulation can predict the dangerous region and springback of the material, and is helpful to improve the deep drawing quality.Experimental study and numerical simulation results show that the mechanical property of paperboard is orthotropic. Paperboard can be made into rectangular boxes by deep drawing, in the appropriate conditions and parameters. The FLD determined by experiments, can be imported into finite element analysis software. The FLD has guiding significance for production practice of deep drawing of paperboard. As a result, the application of paperboard in packaging field has further expansion.
