We described the synthesis of PNIPAm-co-PMAA brushes on nano-patterned silicon surface via two different initiators. One is2-bromo-2-methyl-propionyl bromide (I1) and the other is bromo-isobutyrate undecylene ester (I2).Through a series of tests and control experiments, we found that, compared with I1, the reaction time becomes shorter, the consumption of initiator gets less, and the reaction itself maintain more efficient when we used I2. The main research work is summarized into two aspects as follows:1. Synthesis of PNIPAm-co-PMAA by2-bromo-2-methyl-propionyl bromide. Here, we apply a convenient stepwise reaction method to prepare PNIPAm-co-PMAA on Si surface. It includes (a) preparation of nano-patterned silicon surface,(b) the coupling of a terminal hydroxy monolayers onto silicon surface under microwave irradiation,(c) immobilization of I1,(d) synthesis of copolymer under weak basic solution.By the characterization of MTR/FT-IR, we found the IR spectra obtained matches each step. By changing the factor of the concentration of monomer, we got that the height of copolymer on Si surface heighten with the increase of the concentration monomer.2. Coalescence of PNIPAm-co-PMAA by bromo-isobutyrate undecylene ester In this chapter, we substitute I1with I2to synthesize PNIPAm-co-PMAA. It involves (a) synthesis of I2,(2) immobilization of I2,(c) polymerization of NIPAm-MAANa under a solution with pH=8.5-9.By the characterization of1HNMR and FT-IR, we found the data is in consistent with the product. Through the characterization of MTR/FT-IR of every step, IR spectra matches reaction basically. We also studied the impact of different monomer concentration on the polymerization of PNIPAm-co-PMAA.
