Relative humidity (RH) is one of the most important factor for indoor comfort, too low or too high of RH is more likely to induce bacteria breeding, which therebyaffects human health a lot. Therefore, it is of greet significance to develop and preparehumidity controlling materials with humidity control, purifying the air, antibacterialfunctions etc. for improving the living environment and the quality of life.In this study, laponite/poly(sodium acrylate-acryamide)(PAA-AM) composite, corn straw/PAA-AM composite and Cu[(NH3)4]2+-laponite/PAA-AM composite wereprepared by inverse suspension polymerization. The optimal preparation conditionswere decided through orthogonal test. SEM (EDS), TEM, XRD, FTIR, BET andTG/DTG were used to characterize and analysis the surface morphology, ingredient, structure and thermal stabilities of the composites, and the antibacterial property,absorption/desorption rate as well as active humidity control property of thecomposites were also test.Surface morphology and structure analyses show that the three kinds ofcomposites are composed of spherical particles with rough surface, laponite/cornstraw combines with the PAA-AM copolymer via chemical bonds. It is shown thatPAA-AM copolymer inserts into the interlayer and pores of laponite, which resultsthe interlayer spacing change from1.443nm to1.840nm.Humidity control properties test results show that three kinds of humiditycontrolling materials feature high moisture absorption and desorption rates, and fastresponse, are capable of adjusting the relative humidity to a proper range andcontrolling it relatively stable.Antibacterial test of Cu[(NH3)4]2+-laponite/PAA-AM composite shows that theantibacterial rate to staphyloccocus aureus and escherichia coli are99.9%and92.8%respectively.
