Zoning management technology plays an important role in leakage control andreducing the difference ratio between water supply and consumption, therefore it isrecognized as an economic and effective leakage control method in water supplyindustry. However, there is still a limitation in zoning technology’s wide applicationfor the existing zoning methods are almost based on subjective experience, whichmakes the zoning schemes random and not guaranteed to their rationality.A zoning method dependent on graph theory was put forward in this paper whichthinks water supply network as a huge complicated graph model and applies shortestpath problem theory in zoning. The method, with clear and standard process, greatlyreduces the dependence of subjective experience in zoning and plays the positive rolein zoning management technology’s widespread application.First, the existing zoning management theories, methods and principles werecollected and summarized, the reasonable and feasible parts of that were chose aszoning foundation after classification and comprehensive analysis.Second, the zoning method and process were put forward according to the zoningresearch and practice. Then, the hydraulic model of a certain real network in north China wasestablished with EPANET and calibrated with monitoring data of network operationcondition; the number of DMAs was determined considering network realities; thenetwork was thought as a graph model and different weight functions were chose;combined with pressure zoning and management zoning, the zoning calculation wascarried out with MATLAB and different zoning schemes were obtained.Final, all the zoning schemes were evaluated comprehensively in terms ofnetwork leakage, pressure distribution balance and zoning expenses to determine theoptimal zoning scheme; the hydraulic conditions, pressure distribution and velocitysituation before and after zoning management were contrasted for investigation on theeffect of zoning scheme.
