Masonry structuresare widely used in thecountryside. But, all previous earthquakedisasters have shown that the damage of masonry structures in the earthquake is serious.The destruction of masonry structures has caused a large number of casualties andproperty losses. But, at present, the study on the nonlinear performance of masonrystructures is less. The present study results are basically in elastic stage. The study ofmasonry structures in elastic-plastic stage is less.Even though previous studies indicate that masonry structures cann’t get into adeep nonlinearity, it may collapseeasily once when it get into nonlinearity becausestructural performance of masonry wall is comparatively brittle. Therefore, it isnecessary to do further study on the nonlinear performance and seismic performance ofmasonry structures.The work has been completed is as follows:①The problems needed to pay attention to when using the finite element software,ABAQUS, to establish finite element models of masonry structures are discussed. And,Therelated parameters settings in ABAQUS when establish finite element models ofmasonry structures are also studied.②The mechanical performance of normal masonry walls and the masonry walls thathave ring beams and construction columns are studied. The magnitude of top pressureand grade of mortar strength are mainly taken into account.③Influence of different mortar grade on nonlinear performance and aseismatic designof masonry structures is studied.④Influence of opening hole in the cross wall on the nonlinear performance andaseismatic design of masonry structures is studied.⑤The relationship between failure performance under strong earthquake and overstrength factor of masonry structure is studied.Through the studies of above, the main conclusionsare as follows:①Through reasonable parameters setting and meshing, the results of using finiteanalysis software, ABAQUS, to simulate the various mechanical properties of masonrystructures are reliable.②The top pressure and mortar grade have obvious influence on normal masonrywalls and masonry walls that have ring beams and construction columns. It is reflected in shear bearing capacity and ductility of masonry walls.③The over strength factors that are calculatedunder frequent earthquake can beused to estimate the collapse state under strong earthquake. The area percentage andmagnitude of DAMAGET can also be used to judge the collapse state under strongearthquake.
