With the rapid economic and social development, urbanization has a high increasingpenetration, and the energy consumption of the building areas sustained high growth, theemissions of various pollutants have also increased. In order to cope with the phenomenonof energy shortages and depletion, more and more countries placed to the use of renewableenergy and new energy in an important strategic position. Meanwhile, with the deepening ofeducation reform in China, the higher education is becoming increasingly popular, and scaleand number of the University Towns has a tremendous change. With the rapid developmentof the city, the University Towns are moved to larger spaces for development in the suburbfar from the city center. In the background of the countries vigorously promoting renewableenergy technology applications to achieve energy reduction, ground source heat pumptechnology has gained favor to more and more people with its excellent performance ofhighly efficient, energy-saving, environmental protection. This provides strong technicalsupport for ground source heat pump technology applying to the University Town heating inwinter. The paper intends to investigate the status of central heating in northern China. Itselects some typical heating stations in Tianjin, conducting the survey from the heatingmode, the production time, fuel type and consumption, electricity consumption. Throughanalyzing the data, the paper points out the urgency of the grim situation of energyconsumption and promoting renewable energy applications. To the development status ofUniversity Town, this paper surveys the distribution of colleges and universities in HebeiProvince, collects data of an area of covers, the construction area, the winter heating areaand the enrollment scale of University Towns. Through the calculation of data, it isspecified that energy consumption of winter heating in the University Town occupies an important position in the total energy consumption of the community, and causes seriousenvironmental pollution. Geothermal energy as a clean and renewable energy in China has arich amount of storage. Better using of ground source heat pump technology is an urgentneed to establish a resource-saving society. Ground source heat pump technologyapplications in University Town winter heating is the trend of social development. The clean development mechanism is a low-carbon emission reduction mechanismscarrying out between the developed and developing countries, and it still do not have acarbon reduction methodology for ground source heat pump technology. Through check andstudy the information, the paper developed a relatively complete a set of carbon emissionreduction calculations and monitoring methods to the ground source heat pump. It is alsodefined its scope and the project boundary, determined the baseline scenario, developedcarbon reduction formula. In addition, this paper calculates carbon emission reduction ofone of University Towns ground source heat pump project with the developed methodology. The carbon emission reductions of one building of5000m2are291.52tons in the normalyear. When ground source heat pump applies to the entire university town of400,000m2,the carbon emission reductions are23,000tons. At the same time, this paper analyzeseffectiveness of the environmental, economic, and social. It is concluded that ground sourceheat pump technology has broad prospects for application in winter heating in UniversityTowns in north of China.
