Conditions of the oil flowing in the piston assembly have direct influence on the tribological performance, emissions, economics and lubrication of the IC engine. Supported by National Science Foundation project "Study on mechanism of oil flowing through piston assembly in Internal Combustion Engine", the mechanism of oil flowing through the ring groove area and its influence factors have been studied based on the dynamic analysis of the piston and rings.There are three steps for the oil to flow through the ring groove area in IC engine. Firstly, under different driving forces, oil is forced into the piston ring groove side gap from adjacent ring land during a certain time. Then the oil flows from one piston ring groove side gap to the other side. Last, oil flows out of the piston ring groove to the adjacent ring land under some forces. In this thesis, the theoretical analysis of the mechanism and the influence factors driving oil in and out of the ring groove is demonstrated at the beginning. Movement of piton and piston ring relative to the groove are the most important factors. In the calculation, AVL EXCITE Piston&Ring software is used as simulation tool. Based on the dynamic theory of piston and ring, under special working condition, the dynamics analysis of the piston and ring in a full cycle is carried out. Then different flowing models are built under different driving forces. Oil flowing through the ring groove area in a full cycle are calculated and the results were evaluated. Finally, the influence factors of oil flowing are discussed reference to the results.
