Pulsed power technology is a kind of emerging technology which mainlyresearches the process of storing minor energy, effectively releasing to load through fastcompression and transformation in a relatively long time. This process is a virtualamplification of output power to input power. With the fast development of nationaleconomy, pulsed power technology has been widely used in the field of nuclear physics,electron beam, accelerator, laser, discharge theory, plasma technology, etc. And it hasmet with worldwide concern as a high-tech with fundamental, crossing and wideapplication foreground. For requirement of developing strong-current and repetition-rateelectron beam accelerator with high power and compact structure, high power and highrepetition-rate switch is the key component, it determines the performance of the wholeaccelerator largely. Gas spark switch is widely applied in the field of pulse power for itsadvantages of simple structure, wide working voltage range, huge charge quantityconversion, etc. Therefore, the study on gas spark switch with high power, highrepetition-rate, high current, quick conduction (conduction time of microseconds tonanoseconds) and long-longevity can greatly improve the performance of pulse device.In this paper, the theoretical basis of breakdown process in gas spark switch isanalyzed, including the Townsend discharge theory, classical stream theory andPaschen’s law; The working principle of gas spark switch and the gas discharge processis introduced; By comparing various high power and high repetition-rate gas switcheswith regular structure, a kind of two-electrode and self-breakdown gas switch withirregular cavity structure is designed. This gas switch works at MV level, the design offlow channel is relatively simple and reliable; Then, the main shape and sizeoptimization design of switch structure is carried out by using the electromagneticsimulation software CST EM STUDIO, and the gap between high voltage electrode andground electrode is also analyzed; At the same time, the equivalent circuit of workingaccelerator is simulated through using the circuit simulation software PSpice, the peakcurrent waveform, power waveform and energy waveform are researched after, thenchannel energy and power are analyzed; the heating and temperature rising process of switch electrode are deducted theoretically; By using the finite element analysissoftware ANSYS, process of switch electrode is simulated, the cooling way of addingcoolant to electrode is verified. Finally, the preliminary design of switch cooling systemis put forward, selection of cooling material and design of cooling liquid flow areresearched.
