Whether a building is good or bad is decided not solely by itself but by its harmony with its surrounding environment. Steven Hall once said:" Unlike music, painting, sculpture, film and literature, architecture is subject to geographical restrictions and always intertwines with the history of the region." Meanwhile, from the aspect of psychological needs, local people require architectural culture that really belongs to them to seek spiritual destination; strangers need to experience the architectural culture of others to broaden their mind. Although modern architecture call for the expression of regions and areas, integration of the global trading system and implant of modern architecture will impact the life of local residents and surrounding environment to a certain extent. Making modern architecture more harmonious with local geographical features is of great importance to the functions and ornamental values of an entire building. A good building should include characteristics of the times and is harmonious the surrounding environment with mutual integration of the architecture and environment of mutual conditions. Only in this way can it take root in this land firmly.The thesis has five chapters. The first chapter discusses the purpose, significance, and innovation points of the research, analyzes the status quo and trends of similar researches at home and abroad, and presents the research methods, serving as the basis of the argument of this article. The second chapter explains the importance of areas for architecture, studies architecture regionalism from three aspects, and analyzes the geographical features of the surrounding regions of Erhai Lake for a more comprehensive understanding, laying a solid foundation for subsequent theoretical research and analysis. The third chapter classifies and analyzes the architecture set up in recent two decades around Erhai Lake and explores the course of its development, presenting many case studies. The fourth chapter analyzes and studies the architecture around Erhai Lake by combining the geographical features of the surrounding regions of Erhai Lake, and explores the relevance between architecture set up in recent two decades around Erhai Lake and its geographical features, and finally summarizes the contradictions between them and analyzes the causes. The fifth chapter, on the basis of questions and causes mentioned in the fourth chapter, envisions corresponding solutions from the aspects of planning and architectural design to make the architecture set up in recent two decades around Erhai Lake and the geographical environment harmonious, and makes a prospect of the architecture around Erhai in the future.
