City, which is composed by different segments of history, is a special carrierof history and culture. The most significant meaning of city is its function whichmakes it inherit human culture, inspiring people living in it. Furthermore, as asocial organism, city has its own outstanding characteristics which make it differfrom other cities. Due to the diversity of different cities‘features, the humanculture is diverse. Besides, the historic areas in the city which contain a largeamount of historic heritage as well as tradition and excellent design of planning arethe witness of city‘s development. The physical environment which is the specialcarrier of culture is major way for culture recognition of citizens. The old historicalmemories of old city and areas is the spiritual support for them. However, owningto the bad environment and lace of infrastructure of public services, many historicbuildings have been demolished and the special characteristics is disappearing.Thus, it is significant to carry out historic renewal combining history and cityculture, in order to develop sustainable methods.This paper analysis studies of old cities‘renewal and concept of culture. Thendevelops features of city history and culture, in order to come to the essential targetof historic renewal: the regeneration of culture in historic environment. Based onthis theory instruction, two cases in UK and two in China are explored, accordingto their major methods, achievements and problems. During case study,investigations of physical environment and cultural recognition are explored basedon the combining of quantitative and qualitative research.Finally, the practical and theoretic strategies are suggested from aspects ofurban design, policy making and public participant in order to guide the furtherhistoric renewal in other cities.
