Rivers and lakes are densely covered in the middle and lower reaches of theYangtze River, whichhave the unique customs and beautiful natural scenery.largeand small towns relying on the special geographical location and naturalgeographical advantages were flourishing and also had a distinctivetraditionalarchitectural culture, which is an important historical and cultural heritage. Thistopic selects two ancient towns of Sanheand Xitang which are the mostrepresentative sections of the waterfront buildings.understand their formationbackground, development and distributions based on a large number of works ofliterature, existing research results and field trips, and recognize the diversecomposition regularity from the regionand space. Finally, on this basis, accordingto the external space theory, extract rivers,streets and waterfront buildings thesethree main external space form elements, and combine with the social conditionsand specific historical background, understand this external spatial structuremoreintuitively and clearly,At the same time analyze and compare the compositionregularity, spatial sequence and spatial level changes, finally, summed up thesimilarities and differences of the external space form of Sanheand Xitang. Thesestudies can be more in-depth understanding of the external space organizationalrelationships and organizational practices within the study area,future in the newround of urban construction, we can make the modern way of life and the culturalspirit of Chinese traditional region better blend together to create a more rationaland comfortable space.
