As a kind of energy storage component which can be recycled to charge anddischarge, Value Regulated Lead Acid Battery (VRLAB) is widely used in theemergency power supply of wind power generation’s pitch system. As the chargingpower supply, the property of a battery charger has a direct effect on the batteries’service life. Thus a battery charger plays a vital role in batteries’ popularization andapplication. Aimed at developing a highly efficient, intelligent and reliable pitch systembattery charger, the paper has completed the following works.Firstly, according to charger’s design index, the overall solution of the charger isdetermined. After a contrastive analysis of the common switching power supplyconverter, a two-switch forward converter with its secondary side rectifier ciecuit inseries is chosen as the charging power to ensure the reliability of the charger.Secondly, in order to combine the advantages of constant current(CC) and constantvoltage(CV) charging, a charging method including CC&CV&floating is adopted tomake the actual charging curve consistent with the battery charging characteristic curve.Thirdly, according to the overall solution, the detailed design of the charger circuitis completed, including parameter calculation and selection of main-circuit’s powerdevices, signal detection and modulation circuit, digital control circuit based on MCUMSP430F2418, CPLD hareware protection circuit, power switch driving circuit, etc.Finally, the charger is tested. The test results show that the function of temperaturecompensation and protection is normal. At the same time, the efficiency can reach89%.Besides, the actual charging is in conformity with battery charging characteristic curve.It is thus clear that the system meet the design index.
