Vehicle population is steadily increasing nowadays in cities with the rapid development of China’s automobile industry. Consequently traffic congestions, energy shortages and environmental problems are gradually highlighted. With the growing demand for energy-saving and emission reduction as background, a study of engine idling-stop system is made in this paper which could effectively improve the fuel economy of traditional energy vehicles in cities. In this paper, both domestic and abroad developments of idling-stop system were introduced at first. Then the technical solution of the system was decided based on the analysis of its operating principle, overall structure and components. After that, a detailed study was made about the key components and its strengthening methods of the idling-stop system. Subsequently, a reasonable control strategy for urban traffic condition was devised by analyzing the electronic control components of idling-stop system. Finally, a vehicle model was built based on a common urban sedan in AVL CRUISE, applying the edited Stop-Start module from Engine Control modules to the vehicle model. Simplified control strategy was inputted in the Stop-Start module. Afterwards, Hefei urban driving-cycle was established based on Hefei urban traffic data which were collected and processed by Qiu Duoyang. Then, fuel consumption simulations were done in Hefei urban together with NEDC and C ADC urban driving-cycles. After comparing the simulation results with Stop-Start module and the results without that module, it is proved that in all the three urban driving cycles, the idling-stop system performs effectively in energy-saving and emission reduction...
