As the main type of towns in the Northwest Loess Plateau region, valley townshave been faced with a great development opportunities in the context of rapidurbanization and national policies, resulting in the rapid urban population growth andthe rapid expansion of the scale of land, and what’s more, the prominent contradictionbetween people and land.Faced with this challenge, some towns begin to do someconstructions on the mountain, in the phenomenon of which, the paper makes someanalysis.The paper aims to sort out and analyze the historical evolution of the mountainuse in the Northwest Loess Plateau, and then explore the objective law of townsdevelopment in mountain uses, which shows practical significance on utilization ofmountain in Northwest Loess Plateau in the future.Based on a large number of access to historical documents, the paper ueses themethods of historical research, and according to the characteristics of mountain use,with time range for clues, the author divides the reasearch object into five stages:primitive society, slave period, the feudal society, the modern era as well as moderntimes, and summarizes the characteristics of of mountain use of various historicalperiods. The paper further make analysis of influence of the main factors of urban landuse of mountain, which includes the natural environment factors, social andenvironmental factors and urban economic development factor. Finally, the papersummarizes the characters and rules of mountain-valley town evolution in the northwestloess plateau region. As to the influencing factors, the natural environmental factorsshowed an overall decline, while the economic development factors strengthend,meanwhile, the social factors showed fluctuated trends. As to the mountain space utilization, the trend changed from the passive adaptation to active modification, whichis because of the demand of towns spatial expansion and changes of people’s values inmountain utilization, and so the mountain utilization has been increased gradually.The paper finally proposes the main influencing factor and recommendations thatshould focus on, of valley towns of the northwest loess plateau in the mountain uses inthe future.
