Museum of art is a holy land for the collection of art pieces, providing people aplace for mind relaxation and reflection. In the past century, art galleries have beenspringing up on a large scale in China. However, for China‘s museum of artconstruction, it is still a stage of fast development and new exploration as well. Eventhough, there is a lack of research on museum of art design in recent China. Also, therescarcely exist outstanding pieces of art gallery construction. Thus, from the perspectiveof architects of art gallery, it is an issue of great importance to ponder over that how todesign a great museum of art and the special features for an excellent museum of art, etc. The architecture design styles and approaches have become increasingly variedand rich. In such situation, the design of the core value of a museum of art–exhibitionroom is considered rather vital. It is undoubtedly a task of great challenge for thearchitects to satisfy a variety of needs from the gallery owner; to meet the requestsfrom the artists concerning display optimization; moreover, from the visitors‘perspective, to take care of their space perception. As a sub-discipline of the museum, the specialized literatures on museum of art, especially for ones in which the exhibition room is the research target and the researchperspective is three-dimensional space, are very rare compared to the museum as alarger category. As a consequence, many architects find it difficult to search for therelevant information to resort to in the very beginning stage of their design work.In order to tackle the problem mentioned above, the author attempts to do a pieceof research on the art galleries‘exhibition room from the view of space matching‘. To be more specific, the researcher adopts the three-dimensional graphic analytic methodto analyze the space of an exhibition room, in order to reveal the regulation andcharacteristics lied within the design of the art gallery‘s exhibition room. The “space matching” refers to an approach to study the size of a space, and theallocation and combination of different spaces from the perspective of the space‘sphysical features, such as length, width, height, square meter and volume, etc.. The space matching‘achieves when the allocation and combination of the spaces arewidely recognized. Otherwise, it fails.Narrowing down to the study on the space matching of modern art galleries‘exhibition room, within this paper, a large number of distinguished art galleries‘exhibition rooms are analyzed from the view of space size and space allocation andcombination. Specifically, the research subjects are20outstanding art galleries homeand abroad all together. Their exhibition rooms‘three-dimensional sizes and spaceallocations are analyzed in detail, followed by a few graphic statistical analyses. In thisway, the author summarizes a few common features of modern art galleries‘spacematching. Hopefully, the research results could shed some lights on future study on artgalleries‘exhibition rooms.
