The switched reluctance motor (SRM) has a series of excellent performancesuch as wide speed range, simple structure, high efficiency and so on. It has shown ahuge development potential in many fields. But shortcomings like large torqueripple, vibration and noise restrict its application in some high precision servosystems. The traditional6/2SRM has excellent high speed performance but hard toself-starting and large torque ripple at low speed. Based on this, the paper putsforwards a new structure of SRM with auxiliary rotor teeth—DRAWSRM.Firstly, the paper reviews the research status about reducing the torque ripple ofSRM both at home and abroad, and then analyses the existing methods based on themotor’s structural improvement and optimization.Secondly, this paper introduces and analyses the new motor’s structuralcharacteristic, control strategy and its working principle. At the same time, the papercombines the design method of the traditional SRM and the structural characteristicof the new motor, and then comes up with the electromagnetic design method ofDRAWSRM.Thirdly, this paper applies for Ansoft software to analysis the influence ofdifferent stator and rotor (contains the main rotor tooth and the auxiliary rotor tooth)arc width on the low and high speed performance. Besides, combined with thesimulation results, the recommended range of stator and rotor arc width are givenunder different performance requirements. Make a model motor and do someexperiment. In addition, this paper compares the performance of DRAWSRM and thetraditional6/2and6/4SRM. Through the comparison, we can get the conclusionthat the DRAWSRM has the advantages of both6/2SRM (high efficiency at highspeed) and6/4SRM (easy self-starting, smooth torque at low speed). What’s more, the higher the motor speed is, the more obvious the advantage of its high-speedperformance is.
