Chengdu has been trying to find its own new mode of new ruraldevelopment,as part of its coordinated urban and rural development program. The rural woodlands,or linpan, are undoubtedly one of the most importantheritage and wealth of Chengdu. The massive and fast erosion of the ruralwoodlands,is attributed fundamentally to,as held in this Article, the impact ofurbanization. The key to the organic and sustainable renovation anddevelopment of the rural woodlands are also subject to the cities. Therefore, the reconstruction of the woodlands space should be reviewed strategically atthe level of the urban structure. This Article,by analyzing the evolution of Chengdu’s clusters of traditionalwoodlands and the factors having impacts thereto, looked into the structuralelements of the clusters of woodlands and the mechanism to from drivingforces, focusing on the spacial layout and the organic sustainability of woodlandclusters, and summarized the impact of such elements as hills, waters, farmlands, towns, and culture on the development of woodlands in general, withespecial focus on the special driving force for the formation of woodlands of theDujiangyan irrigation works. With the pathology in human populations, the fundamental causes of thedownturn of the woodlands are analyzed from the economic, technical andenvironmental perspectives and the appearance and mechanism of damage to theorganic sustainability of traditional woodlands by urbanization are also analyzed. It is highlighted that the major challenges to the sustainability of the currentvillage-town framework of Chengdu are the small-sized clustering, highbreakthroughs and broad integration. From new perspectives and with the relevant theories of organic growth, this Article proposes a modular and unit-wise urban-rural spacial structure inadherence with the roadmap of coordinated urban and rural space planning, analyzes systematically the basic units of urban and rural spaces, and proposesthe fundamental attributes of balance between production and residence, multiplex functions, human friendly dimensions,well-established services and unique diversity. The main attributes of basic rural units are particularlysummarized by case studies. This Article ventures to propose a core concept of "extended woodlandunits"(EWUs) and analyzes the major factors having impact on the EWU bycategories, including four aspects,i.e. the softened factors, retained factors, strengthened factors and new factors. It is proposed to reconstruct the core, node, relationship and area spacial frameworks of woodland clusters andcomposite functional framework centered on the small sized urbanized towns. Italso proposes the basic strategies for the EWUs from the perspectives ofindustrial development, landscaping, size of population, layout of habitats, public services and facilities, transportation systems and architectural design. Inaddition, this Article ventures to argue that the EWUs are the basic spacial unitsof Eco-garden cities, from the perspective of Chengdu as a whole, and to projectthe basic spacial structures of Chengdu Eco-garden City.
