As the substitution of traditional metal material, lightweight material has beenwidely used in the lightweight design of automotive in recent years. Carbon FiberReinforced Plastic cylindrical coil spring for the suspension is a typical application. After extensive literature research, it is found that there is little theoretical study, inparticular on the design methods of stiffness and strength of the CFRP cylindrical coilspring. Based on the background above, the related problem has been researched indetail. The core of spring wire is made by Peek and the outer part is made by±βangle-ply carbon fiber composites. After corresponding simplification of the spring, themodel of the spring has been established. Based on characteristics of laminated structureand the non-homogeneous anisotropic properties of carbon fiber composites, the formula for stiffness and strength of CFRP cylindrical coil spring has been got, whichincorporates the computing idea of layer-by-layer integral and refers the design methodof metal cylindrical coil. In addition, the design method of the stiffness and strength ofCFRP cylindrical coil spring has been studied. And the relationship between thestructural parameters and the stiffness and strength of the spring is established. In orderto prove the validity of the formula for the stiffness and strength of the CFRP cylindricalcoil spring, a finite element model of the CFRP cylindrical coil spring is established andanalyzed with ANSYS. The error between the theoretical results and the results ofsimulation is relatively small, therefore, the formula and design method of the stiffnessand strength of the CFRP cylindrical coil spring are reasonable and effective, which canprovide a reference for engineering applications of the CFRP cylindrical coil spring.
