The research and development of high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet isin progress steadily along with the constant improvement of the performance of HTS wires.HTS toroidal magnet is a kind of HTS magnet structures. Its most important and promisingapplications are HTS toroidal SMES and HTS Tokamak TF coil. The electromagnetic andmechanical optimal designs of these two types of magnets are carried out in this paperbased on electromagnetic field theory and elastic theory. The major works of the paper areas follows:(1) The electromagnetic and mechanical optimal design method of HTS toroidalmagnet has been put forward. This method is also applicable to other kinds of HTSmagnets.(2) The electromagnetic optimal design of HTS toroidal SMES has been accomplishedadopting the method which has combined GA (genetic algorithm) with FEM (finite elementmethod). The structural parameters of toroidal SMES, which has the maximum energystorage capacity, have been searched for when the total length of HTS wires is given. In thiscase, the relationships between the structural parameters and energy storage capacity oftoroidal SMES have been summarized. The leakage magnetic fields of toroidal SMES havebeen analyzed to evaluate its influence to the surrounding areas. The analysis ofelectromagnetic forces of unit coils has given the basis to the design of support structure oftoroidal SMES.(3) By adopting ANSYS sequential coupling analyzing method of electromagneticfield and mechanical field, the mechanical optimal design of HTS toroidal SMES has beenaccomplished and the support structure which is applicable to toroidal SMES has beendesigned out. The improvement of the strength of the HTS wires has been put forwardbased on the poor mechanical strength problems that have appeared in the design progress.Therefore, this could maximum the advantages of HTS wires’ high current density.(4) The design of ITER Tokamak HTS TF coils and the electromagnetic andmechanical analysis of them have been accomplished. It turns out that the magnetic fieldcan satisfy the requirements of MCF (magnetic confinement fusion) and the mechanicalstrength of HTS wires can guarantee the work safety of the magnet.
