It is a simple and efficient way for bridge floor expansion to add cantilever plate.Using cantilever structure and not widening piers (abutment), it can also make the mostuse of existing bridge structure, which anchors for cantilever plate. However, beingbroadened by long cantilever structure, the double-arch bridge will be confronted with abig problem: the ultimate bearing capacity of the main arch ring. Higher standard has to begiven for the factor of the weight of the cantilever plate and the live load on it. Accordingto the problem, the author will research on the mechanical characteristic of the main archring before or after being broadened. In detail, the ultimate bearing capacity of the mainarch ring will be researched.Shanhua Bridge, settled in the county of Jiangle, is a double-arch bridge with spanarrangement of6×43m. With stable foundation, the bridge has a gravity abutment, and agood substructure. Not meeting the demand of the growing traffic volume, the double-archbridge is decided to be broadened by long pre-stressed cantilever slab, and the main archring of the bridge will be reinforced.Based on practical engineering projects, the following tasks will be completed.Firstly, the theory of the ultimate bearing capacity and methods for analysis will beexplained.Secondly, based on analysis results, from the simulation analysis of the structurebefore and after being broadened and strengthened, the mechanical characteristic of themain arch ring will be researched.Thirdly, the ultimate bearing capacity of the reinforced main arch ring will be studied.And the factor of the temperature is especially included. Finally, the ultimate live load will be researched by iterative calculation.Fourthly, the analysis results show that: the mechanical characteristic of the mainarch ring will be greatly improved after the structure is broadened and strengthened.The theory of the ultimate bearing capacity will be enriched by the research results.Moreover, the theoretical foundation for the double arch bridge will be provided, which isbroadened by the long cantilever.
