Power industry is facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities. Higherreliability and availability are necessary for increasing complex power system. Theresearch on the electrical equipment has usually focused on the large ones, such as largetransformer,generator, etc. The operating status of high voltage circuit breaker, animportant unit in the field of electrical system, directly affects the stability and safety ofpower system. However, the relevant researches are still in a circle of experimental stage.The preventive maintenance method based on time has been applied to breaker since manyyears ago, which caused not only a waste in human resources and material resources, butalso an excess in maintenance, as a result of blind or improper repair. The research on thecondition monitoring and fault diagnosis for the breaker could find abnormity in time andimprove systems reliability. The study has important engineering meaning in actualproject.The reliability of high voltage circuit breaker depends on the manufacturing andoperational maintenance. Based on the Finite Element numerical method (FEM) onelectromagnetic field, this paper applies the finite element software package ANSYS toresearch the insulation problems of high voltage circuit breaker. Finished these research amore uniform electric field distribution, a lower breakdown voltage and higher insulationlevel are achieved. Most of high voltage circuit breaker are caused by mechanical failure,the features of current waveforms in the close-brake process are extracted, CurvilinearComponent Analysis (CCA) and Self-Organizing Map (also called Self-OrganizingFeature Map: SOM) are applied to analyze the relationship between the features andrelevant fault, then the diagnosis rules which can be used for fault diagnosis of highvoltage circuit breaker with less failure are obtained. Gas leakage and excessive watercontent is easy to cause deterioration of the insulation. Combined with “The real-timemonitoring data in fault diagnosis system of Songjiang river power plant”, the paperprovides repair decision–making reference of breakers’arcs.The core idea of the paper is aimed at the faults of high voltage circuit breaker, takingappropriate measures to improve the reliability and availability. The innovation of thepaper is CCA-SOM algorithm to abstract the diagnosis rules and FEM algorithm to studythe insulation performances which are chosen to improve the reliability of high voltage circuit breaker.
