With the development of the cities in China, the scale of water distribution systems becomes larger, and the systems become more and more complex. The optimal design of water distribution system (WDS) can reduce the running costs and increase the reliability of water distribution system. So great economic benefit and social benefit can be achieved. The research progress of the optimal design of WDS was systematically reviewed. The traditional single target model of optimal design only concerns the annual converted expense. The optimal design model of municipal WDS based on the objectives of the minimum economic expanse, the maximum hydraulic reliability and the maximum entropy reliability was proposed. Using hydraulic reliability, whether the consumers in the nodes can be satisfied or not can be determined. Using entropy reliability, the uniformity of distributed pipe flow can be measured. To solve the problems of local convergences for standard Harmony Search (HS) algorithm, a self-adaptive HS algorithm which has a strong global search ability is proposed to optimize the multi-objective optimization model. Case study shows the reliability and validity of improved algorithm is verfied.
