In today’s world of architecture, landscape architecture has become increasinglyactive. Its very own unique features which make it the spirit of the city, sometimescan form a clear picture of the city without the objective existence of the constructionitself. Therefore, landscape architecture has become a source of vision, memory andjoy. In China, the good effect of public landscape architecture and landscape radiationeffect have improved the overall image of the city and quality of the public space. However, the blind pursuit of building novelty and taller construction has set thedevelopment of landscape architecture in a dilemma. Based on the status quo, theauthor will focus on flexible, small to medium-sized public landscape architecture, and introduce the concept of adaptability, so that a solution can be found, the fixedrigid model can be broken and the vitality of landscape architecture can be extended. This paper is divided into four parts. The first part contains the first two chapters, which sets out the framework for the whole paper, focuses on the definition of smalland medium-sized urban public landscape architecture, summarizes commonproblems in the development of China’s small and medium-sized public landscapearchitecture. The second part is the third chapter, which introduces the concept ofadaptability into this paper and represents the deeper meaning of this concept. Basedon the fundamental idea and features of the concept of adaptab ility. Chapter three alsodiscusses the main targets of landscape architecture in a certain space and analyses itscharacteristics and main limitations. The third part(core part of this article) containschapter four and chapter five, which starts with the integrating point of landscapearchitecture and the concept of adaptability, provides adaptive strategies specificallyaimed at influential factors of the urban small and medium-sized landscapearchitecture, which are environment, people and time. Hence w e get a new way ofdesigning urban public small and medium-sized landscape architectures. According tothe new theory, we can implement the concept of adaptability further into main placesof the city and elaborate the design philosophy of adaptability and effective ways ofrealization according to the different characteristics of the different places. Chaptersix is the final part of this article, in where the author combines her practicalexperiences, the project of Meixihu, with the whole thesis of the p aper to explore thedesign methods and practical feasibility of adaptability. The author’s expectation is that, through the study of this paper, we will be ableto find the designers a more appropriate design strategy, to lead people to interpretpublic landscape architecture in multiple angles. Therefore, harmony among city, environment, landscape architecture, people and time can be achieved.
