Reverse engineering contains the modern design method, computer aided measurement, CAD, CAM and other high-tech technology. Reverse design of the large size structure has been discussed in this paper, the point cloud data has been obtained from the entity, the CAD model has been constructed according to the processing of point cloud data, finally, the model has been analyzed.Reverse engineering has been introduced in this paper. The technology of reverse design about large structure has been emphasized, such as measurement, data processing, model reconstruction. Large structure has been designed as an excavator movable arm. The data of actuating arm has been obtained with total station, the point cloud data has been pretreated in Imageware, and then surface reconstruction has been finished in UG, the model has been made finite element analysis in ANSYS Workbench. The conclusion of analyzing model showed that the error of point cloud and surfaces has been defined in the allowable range, the allowable stress of model has been measured within the yield limit range; the deformation vibration frequency has been measured beyond the working frequency. The accuracy and operability of model has been proved according to the conclusion, therefore, it has been proved that the feasibility and practicability of this converse designing method for the large structure with total station instrument.
