Research On Protection And Regeneration Of Vernacular Landscape Elements In The Historic Districts Of Jiangnan

Vernacular landscape of historic districts has been irreversibly impacted by the rapid development of urbanization process. The city is a living body, although the society interest changes constantly, the people in the city long for the historic districts which carries the historical feelings which people do like and carries the cultural life which people do desire. So it’s very special important for people to chase regional characteristics and native culture.the Jiangnan historic districts show the unique regional characteristics with "small bridges""running stream""quite house", which depicts the native cultural charm visually and naturally. Therefore, Jiangnan was chosen to research on protecting and regeneration of vernacular landscape elements in historic districts.Vernacular landscape elements in Jiangnan are abundant and have profound cultural connotation. They have typical characteristics of watery south. So the protection and regeneration methods of vernacular landscape elements were put forward by integrating and extracting the vernacular landscape elements and summarizing the construction technique. It will be hopefully resonated by people.This paper researches on eight typical historic districts of Jiangnan. At the first, the paper interprets the concepts of vernacular landscape、vernacular landscape elements、historic districts, protection and regeneration. And on the basis of interpretation it extracted the general content of vernacular landscape elements and classified vernacular landscape elements. Application priciples of vernacular landscape elements were summarized. Meanwhile PVESM was adopted to view the significance of vernacular landscape elements which apply to the historic districts of Jiangnan.Secondly, the paper selected four aeras as Jiangnan area according to the actual vernacular landscape in Jiangnan historic districts. These four areas are the north of Zhejiang province, the south of Jiangsu province, the south of Anhui province,the north of Jiangxi province. Two typical historic districts were chosen respectively on each aera as research objects("water" culture is dominant in one district,No "water" culture is dominat in another district.).the research selected eight characteristic historic districts on eight different citis. And the paper also summarized the natural environment, historic cultural background, traditional feature of folk house of Jiangnan by employing literature analysis, field investigation method, questionnaire survey method, comparative induction, diagram method. Meanwhile, the elements of "the thing","the event","the conception" in historic districts were extracted from the multi-side and multi-view. There are three main purposes. The first purpose shows the regional characteristics of jiangnan landscape to make people understand the vernacular architecture, vernacular stuff, folk tradition and fold customs thoroughly and deeply.The second purpose provides basic materials for protection and regeneration of vernacular landscape elements in jiangnan. The third purpose finds the way how to express and build the vernacular landscape elements and and then build the foundation for better protect and regeneration.Finally the paper describes how to protect and regenerate vernacular landscape elements in Jiangnan historic districts and proposes principle. The paper put forward three protection strategies combination with public requirements,designers thinking orientation and social construction demand. Meanwhile ten common regeneration forms were extracted in Jiangnan historic districts.The foundation of this research is to protect site memory and inherit historic context.The research was hoped to provide some valuable idea for vernacular landscape designers.Therefor the Jiangnan historic districts not only can keep the vernacular architecture body on the material plane, but also can go on carrying the culture and life. Thus the city becomes to be more charming and energetic.
