With the continuous advancement of urbanization in China, the agglomeration effect of the city has become more pronounced on the population, and the scale of various types of cities have continued to expand. At the same time,as an important material carrier of urban history and culture, historic districts are in crisis.Historic districts are usually located in the core areas of the city, which are often dilapidated and have many unauthorized constructions.Usually, property ownership is complex and chaotic, and demolition and resettlement costs are high. Therefore, historic districts are often regarded as a “stumbling block” for urban regeneration and development.Kunming,as one of the first national famous historical and cultural cities in China, faced the same situation in the early days, and the situation in the Historic District of Wenming Street in the center of the city was even worse.Since the Reform and Opening-up,with the great success of the protection and regeneration practice of historical and cultural districts such as Shanghai Xintiandi, the preservation and regeneration of Kunming Wenming Street historic districts has gradually come to the fore.Although protection practices for individual architectural heritage were previously practiced, the systematic conservation planning study of Wenming Street historic districts began in 1993.The foundation stone of the first phase of the “Old Street Kunming” project, the ZhengYi Mall, marks the beginning of regeneration practice on the protection of the district. Therefore, this article selects the protection and renewal practices of the Wenming Street Historic District in Kunming from 2007 to the present.Through analysis and research, combined with the development trend of conservation and regeneration of historic districts at home and abroad, this paper proposes the protection of Wenming Street Historic District in the future. The vision of regeneration is intended to serve as a reference for the protection and regeneration of other historic districts and historic locations in Kunming and even in China. This article mainly presents discussion in the following five chapters:The first chapter introduces the purpose, significance, content and methods of this study, and defines the related concepts such as historic districts and historic buildings. The second chapter, based on the research on the theory and practice of the conservation and regeneration of historical districts at home and abroad, discusses the history and trends of the protection of urban historical districts. The third chapter briefly describes the formation, development of the Kunming Wenming Street Historic District and its spatial characteristics and composition, and analyzes the importance of the district.Chapter IV briefly presents the background of the conservation and regeneration of the Kunming Wenming Street Historic District and its status prior to the protection and regeneration practice, then analyzes in detail the practice of conservation and regeneration of the district from 2007 to the present. It also reviews the problems encountered in the process and the solutions, thru making a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the effects of the current practice. The fifth chapter summarizes the problems and predicaments faced by the conservation and regeneration of the Kunming Wenming Street Historic District. At the same time,it proposes new directions and new mechanisms for the future protection and regeneration of the district and the principles that need to be followed.
