With the rapid development of smart grid, it is very important to judgethe type of short fault and locate fault point correctly in time. It is a hottopic on reducing time of finding out the fault of overhead transmissionline, which can improve the social and economy benefit of the distributionnetwork.In the present, some fault detection equipments of overheadtransmission line have many problems, such as misinformation,non-response, etc. The fault laws and characteristics of short circuit havebeen studied in this paper, and a new detection system based on those lawsand characteristics has been designed. The problem of GSM’s signal blindarea has been solved by using the communication channel based on BeiDousatellites. The hardware and software have been designed. The main topicsof this paper are following:1. The laws and characteristics of short circuit fault of overheadtransmission line have been studied.2. Three parts of hardware circuit have been designed. The first is theFTIU(Fault Test Indicate Unit). The second is DPTRU(Data ProcessingTransmit Receive Unit), and the third is MCTRU(Monitor CenterTransmit Receive Unit).3. The software of the fault detection of overhead transmission linehave been designed. (1) The corresponding software for MCU has been designed. The systemcan detect short circuit fault precisely and timely. The function of remoteand local warning has been realized.(2) The monitoring software has been developed, and remote warningcan be received. The software can give an alarm and inform line-inspectorby sending a message of mobile.This subject is Industry-Academia-Research project. The newdetection system is under Low-Rate Initial Production after undergoing labtests, which improved the accuracy and timeliness. The problem of GSM’ssignal blind area has been solved by taking advantage of BeiDounavigation satellites.
