The wall is one of the basic building elements, wall can divide space and satisfiedhuman’s different needs. Beside the building significance, wall also contain themeaning of form and aesthetic. With the development of technology, materials andaesthetic, the form of wall become increasingly rich and colorful. At the same time,the expression of wall also became various and convey different emotions. All theseemotion of wall is based on the culture, under the influence of Chinese culture, thewall in Chinese space has a different form and emotion from Western. In China, theculture deeply influence the space, especially the Chinese literature. In this article, theauthor attempts to explore traditional Chinese wall design techniques, and try to userhetorical to discuss design techniques and build the connection between literatureand architecture. The rhetorical is try to organize the language, wall as the one ofbasic vocabulary of space also needs to organize. So, to borrow mature rhetoricaltheory system could provide a solid, scientific research methods to explore walldesign techniques.At the beginning, the article demonstrate the connection between literature andspace, language context and space context, literary rhetoric and space rhetoric. Then, the article explore wall design techniques from three stages. First, analysis the wall’soriginal meaning and function from the “word” level. Second, summarizes therelationship between wall and other elements from the “phrase” level. Third, combinethe conclusion in first and second stage to analysis the different rhetoric of walldesign which is under the traditional Chinese space context from the “sentence” level.At last, the article to argue the aesthetics presented in rhetoric of wall design, whichare free, conative, eternal and fun. In this article, the author also try to explore theconnection between literature and architecture and looking for the possibility of a newtheoretical system to explore space, architecture and landscape.
