With the development of wind power technology, China’s wind power installed capacity has reached a high level. Wind farms have been formed scale in many parts of our country. However, the grid conditions cannot fully meet the requirements of large-scale wind power access. The phenomenon of large-scale "abandoned wind to brownouts" exists in our country. There is an obvious contradiction between the construction scale of wind power and the grid’s wind power absorptive capacity. There are a lot of factors affecting the acceptance of wind power capacity, in which the grid’s peaking capacity is one of the important factors. This study is based on comprehensive consideration of changes in system load characteristics, the volatility of wind power and other conditions. This paper makes analysis and quantitative calculation to the level of acceptance of wind capacity with peaking constraints. The main contents include:1) Analyze the grid’s peaking constraints of wind acceptance, including grid load requirements, grid’s peaking capacity, as well as wind power output effects, and so on. Make an analysis on typical load models and wind power output models.2) Study the grid’s peaking capacity. That is the way of different types of conventional peaking units, peaking capacity and peaking costs. The main conventional units are thermal power, hydropower and pumped storage. Pumped storage is a special kind of hydroelectric units. Peaking modes and peaking capacities of these units are different.3) In the peaking process, we distribute the continue changes load according to the principle of equal incremental, and change turbine output to track small amplitude fluctuations frequent load changes. This article gives the calculation method of wind accepting, and the calculation method of wind power acceptance economy.4) Make a calculation of wind accepting capacity of a regional power grid, and obtain quantitative results. For the calculation of grids containing different unit types, the results obtained were analyzed and compared. Since the data in the article is based on the actual load, wind power, and the power grid, the present results have actual reference value.
