The patterns of ridge decoration and traditional auspicious patterns both adopt the means of homophony, allegory, and transformation, and makes use of auspicious symbols to express the people’s life expectation. As a manifestation of the concept of good fortune accumulated in the culture of thousands of years, it contains a wealth of cultural and moral connotation, ethnic aesthetic taste and national thinking model. If the auspicious patterns are an art history of auspiciousness, architectural decoration then would be a part of the art history with the most distinctive cultural characteristics. This thesis starts from the analysis of auspicious patterns, examines and summarizes the ridge decoration patterns, and on this basis analyzes the social and cultural context of the ridge decoration culture.The introduction describes the research status of auspicious patterns and architectural ridge and the cultural value and significance of the research. Based on the previous results, it puts forward its own ideas. In addition to the introduction and conclusion, the body of the thesis consists of five parts.The first part makes a conceptual introduction to the auspicious patterns and decoration ridge, and it serves as the basis of the whole thesis structure. The second part describes the auspicious awareness, auspicious outlook, as well as the development and performance practices of the building decoration. It also clarifies the formation of the concept of good fortune, and the cause of the concept variation in each period, the composition practices of the architectural decoration. It serves as the context of the thesis.The third part describes ridge decoration, the classification and meaning of ridge decoration, and makes a detailed interpretation of this phenomenon of roof ridge. The fourth part makes a detailed analysis of ridge culture and obtains a more detailed understanding of the connotation of the ridge through these cultural phenomena. The fifth part analyzes the pursuit of life and visual performance reflected in auspicious patterns, which is a concrete cultural manifestation of auspicious patterns. It also makes a simple analysis of the prospects for development of auspicious patterns and ridge decoration. Though ridge decorations can not be directly applied to the buildings, the symbolism of auspicious patterns and other practices can have great implications for modern design and make the living space more "humane".The conclusion briefly mentions the changes in the thesis production and the goals in the future, and summarizes the inspiration of ridge decoration on modern design. Though the thinking model of ridge decoration can not be directly applied to modern architectural decoration, the auspicious concept can provide people of high-paced life with a sense of sustenance so that it merits our learning and inheritance critically.
