The vacuum circuit breaker is the most important switch equipment in traction substation. It mainly plays a role of protecting and controlling in traction power supply system and can reliably put into or remove the corresponding lines or electrical equipments according to the need to ensure the safe operation of the system. The realization of online monitoring for the vacuum circuit breaker can help us accurately know the working state and the faulty pats of the equipment. Thus, it can effectively reduce the workload of maintenance, strengthen the pertinence and remarkably improve the reliability and economical efficiency of the traction power supply system.The online monitoring and management system is designed by Beijing Jiaotong University for the high voltage vacuum circuit breaker widely used in traction substation, in collaboration with the Kunming Railway Bureau. Firstly, we study the monitoring technology for circuit breakers at home and abroad and know the trend of development in depth. Meanwhile, the paper introduces the basic structure and working principle of the circuit breaker. Then the paper discusses and determines the monitoring program and method of the monitoring system. After that, the paper explains the principle and fault diagnosis of online monitoring for vacuum circuit breakers. Aiming at difficulty in extraction of characteristic parameter of, the paper creatively puts forward a new method to determine the opening and closing time. Firstly we give quantitative description of vibrational energy in each time during the working process, and then we determine the interval where the aim is through the analysis of the dynamic contact displacement characteristics. We can accurately determine the opening time and closing time by calculating the extreme value point in the range. Next, the paper introduces the developing process of the backstage management software, including the function of each module and the programming method.After successful offline test in Beijing Jiaotong University, the online monitoring and management system also successfully completed the trial operation in the Jinma Village Substation. We respectively had a lot of test in the normal state and fault state. Through the analysis and record of management system software, the change situation of each characteristic parameter is fully consistent with the anticipation, which verifies the reliability of online monitoring system and ability to respond to fault conditions. At the same time, the change of parameters can provide the basis for the inspection and maintenance for circuit breaker.For the moment, the system has been put into trial operation and makes good performance. Test result shows that the system can accurately reflect a variety of exception and fault of the vacuum circuit breaker monitored, and offers reliable technological guarantee for condition based maintenance of high-voltage electrical equipments in traction power supply system.
