Railway is a vital infrastructure for the national economy and occupies an important place in transportation system. With the rapid development of our country’s economy, passenger and freight transport volume in mountain areas increase constantly. Numerous mountain railways are suffering from running over capacity for their low technical standard and low capacity, which leads to a strong need for expanding their transport capacity. Improving railway transport capacity can be realized in two main ways:increasing traffic density and increasing train load, but it’s hard to achieve the former goal, because the traffic density of mountain railway is already very high. By contrast, the more promising way to improve the mountain railway carrying capacity is increasing train load and organizing heavy haul train, which can be realized by means of upgrading mountain railway’s backward facilities. Relevant problems of mountain railway developing heavy haul transport will be studied in this paper.Definition of railway heavy haul transportation and its organization modes are sketched out, and major influencing factors of railway heavy haul transportation are analyzed. Based on analysis of mountain railway existing facilities and adaptability of various revamping-expanding methods, it can be obtained that developing heavy haul transportation is essential and feasible to mountain railway. Technical feasibility of running heavy haul train on mountain railway is analyzed with quantitative and qualitative methods from such aspects as line facilities and traction power supply system, curve radius, limiting gradient and traction locomotive, effective length of receiving-departure track etc. The weight of Mountain train, at present, is restricted by two major factors which are the traction power supply system capacity and the effective length of receiving-departure track. According to current conditions of mountain railway station and yard facilities, in order to organize heavy haul train, the effective length of receiving-departure track should be stretched to1050meters, and the weight of heavy haul train is better during5,500~6,000tons.It is better to take the heavy haul transportation mode with the line opened and freight and passenger traffic mixed, and run the complete heavy haul train. The complete heavy haul train should go through combining and resolving processes under the existing technical conditions, which have bad effects on railway capacity and operation of passenger trains. Compared with normal goods train, the braking length of heavy haul train extends, and the time intervals of station increase. The heavy haul train removes the carrying capacity of mountain railway when running together with normal goods trains and the removal coefficient is between1.1~1.4. The maximum number of heavy haul trains able to run on railroad is decided by the train diagram period of the heavy-haul restriction section and affected by higher level trains. The carrying capacity of heavy haul trains is also influenced by running of passenger train and the removal coefficient is calculated, furthermore, the method to distribute passing stations of heavy-haul train is given.General situation and operate status of Nanning-Kunming railway is sketched out, and yearly passenger and freight volume of Nanning-Weishe section is forecasted. The adaptation of transport capacity to traffic volume is analyzed and as a result, it is essential to develop heavy haul transport. It is capable to organize complete heavy haul train weighting6000tons in Nanning-Weishe section by lengthening the receiving-departure track and taking multi-locomotive traction and some other technical reconstruction measures. The numbers of heavy haul trains of recent and forward periods are figured out, and the distribution of passing stations of heavy-haul train is given at last.
