Spiral bevel gears are important components applied to transfer motion and motive power in modern gearing. Gleason spiral bevel gear is a common one at present. The article aims to probe the common way of measuring the complex gear with general measuring equipment such as coordinate measuring machine. So we can obtain tooth surface geometry information, then, the measurement result will be used to analyze the error between real surface and theoretical surface, and then geometric accuracy of surface could be controled.First of all, we introduce the application of Coordinate Measuring Machine in the error measurement of spiral bevel gear. The method which selects several measurement items from GB11365-89tries to work out the correct measurement way, and obtains the results of measurement after some data processing.Then it introduces machining theory and cutting method in brief, then deduce the tooth surface function on the basis of meshing principle. After that, we confirm the method which expresses tooth function with appropriate parameters in Matlab, which is the theory proof of both the tooth surface gridding nodes dividing and calculating the theoretical tooth surface data.Based on rotating projecting method, the measuring grid could be programmed and the theoretical coordinate values of measuring grid crunodes in tooth surface are obtained under workpiece coordinate system. We worked out the method of measuring head radius compensation along the normal vector at the note. According to measuring principle, we unify the workpiece coordinate system and measuring system, so we can obtain the method of calculating the theoretical tooth surface data, and then finish the experiment. In order to obtain the surface error,we use two ways to reach this target. One is to calculate the normal errors of the surface nodes and the other is the difference surface between real surface and theoretical surface. It provides foundation which amend machine tool regulation parameter.
