High temperature superconducting (HTS) maglev system which possesses characteristics of self-stabilization, energy conservation, environmental protection and some other advantages, is the most anticipated mean of transportation in the21st century, and more and more widely studied around the world.This research is based on the background of the experimental model system of a side-hang rotative HTS maglev at high speed in the vacuum piping. The efficiency of the average HTS bulk, including levitation force and guide force, is regarded as the indicator in application. The quasi state levitation force and guide force of HTS bulks are studied by experiment when they work over the three magnetic hill permanent magnet guideways (PMG) which have iron shims with different thickness, so is done the efficiency of the average HTS bulk in different arrangements when they work over the three PMGs with different structures and sizes. All of them provide valuable references for the design and choice of PMG and the inside structure of maglev model in this system.In the first chapter, the subject background is introduced. First the researches on HTS levitation processes abroad and in china of HTS levitation are summarized in chronological order, including main application of HTS levitation. The major structure of the paper is listed at last.In the second chapter, the magnetization characteristic and levitation principle of HTS bulks are stated. Both two main characteristics (the hysteresis and relaxtion of the levitation force) which was known are introduced.In the third chapter, the design of three magnetic hills PMG is presented. Together with another two single magnetic hill PMGs with the same structure and in different sizes, the efficiency of the average HTS bulk in different arrangements when they work over the three PMGs is studied by experiment. The priority of the different HTS bulks arrangement when the whole levitation force is not enough is obtained. Meanwhile the advantages and disadvantages of the three kind of PMGs are summarized when they are applied in the HTS levitation system.In the forth chapter, the space magnetic fields over three magnetic hills PMG which have iron shims of different thickness (4/6/8mm) are simulated. Then the influence that the shims of different thickness have on the levitation force and guide force in HTS levitation system is studied by experiment.The principle about how to choose the thickness of the shims in PMG is concluded from the analysis of the experimental results.
