Hydraulic In-wheel Motor Drive System (HIMDS), which is a kind of newhydrostatic-assist drive system, can significantly improve the passing ability of heavycommercial vehicles in the condition of low adhesion surface and large slope on the road.In this system, hydraulic components of small size, light weight, high power density, lowcost, long life and other significant advantages make it promising. Based on the NationalScience Foundation, as well as cooperation with an enterprise, this paper, around HIMDSmodeling and control strategy and other key aspects of research work has been done.This paper, Firstly, conducted a parameter matching for the main components. Onthis basis, a physical model of the truck and HIMDS were built. Based on the object andpurpose, this paper developed detailed model for the hydraulic system, vehicle bodydynamics, tire, and road surface.HIMDS is an additional hydraulic system added to a traditional heavy truck. When itoperations, the truck becomes to all-wheel-drive (AWD) from rear-wheel-drive. As forAWD, the slip efficiency of truck is good or bad will have a decisive impact on it tractionperformance. Based on flow characteristics of continuity in hydraulic systems, this paperfully studied the relationship between the displacement of variable displacement pumpand the transmission gear. And then a feedforward+feedback control strategy wasproposed to enable the front wheel speed follow rear wheel. This is the main content ofthis paper, as well as the main innovation point.At last, this paper developed the offline simulation and Hardware-In-Loop (HIL)simulation platforms, then conducted the offline and HIL simulation test which provedthe feasibility of the control strategy.The study on HIMDS described in paper is a pioneering work in domestic. The research methods and results of this study on the key technology of HIMDS are of greatsignificance. The results show that both the vehicle traction force and the climbingcapacity are improved by a large margin after using HIMDS, which means the vehiclepassing ability is improved significantly.
