Along with the development of economic and technique, consumers’demand for the product function becomes higher and higher. Companies have to design and manufacture better products that meet the rapidly changing needs of the market, which makes the manufacturing a fierce competition. Therefore, the introduction of new products which have competitive advantages is an important way to improve the competitiveness of enterprises. In general, the new products are divided into two categories, including product improved and new product. At the same time, the quality of a product is largely dependent on the design stage. So it is very important to propose effective measures for the improvement or new design, which is based on the specific features of the product to meet the customers’need on the concept design stage.Based on the above background, this paper has done research on the method of product improvement and design. In order to have a complete process and improve the innovation capability of designers, this paper presented the characteristics and means of System Analysis and TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving), and put forward a new product improvement design method which was based on System Analysis and TRIZ. On the basis of its process, the system analysis is divided into two ways for the mechanical product, which were the function analysis based on components and FAST (Function Analysis System Technology). This method was also divided into two approaches for upgrading products and design new products. The first approach contained four steps. Firstly, the components and the functional status of the product were analyzed. Then the component diagram was built and the key components and the problems of the product were found. Next, the tools of TRIZ and some other tools were be used to solve these problems. Finally, the solutions and alternatives were evaluated, and it was also important to make sure whether new problems were generated. The second approach focused on the product’s function, containing five steps. Firstly, the overall function of the new product was determined. Then, the overall function was divided into some functional element. Next, the chart of functional system was built. All function elements were mapped to specific structures by using innovative tools. Finally, by building morphological matrix, the alternatives were chosen and evaluated.In conclusion, by applying these two approaches, the key problem of the system could be found accurately firstly, and then TRIZ tools were combined to solve these problems. Finally the alternatives were evaluated.The proposed method in this paper was systematic and integrity, which includes analyzing the problem, identifying the problem, solving the problem and evaluating the alternatives. Each stage presented some tools or means to accomplish the corresponding tasks.Finally, the proposed design method was applied to upgrading the glue application and designing the new toothpick packing machine, which verified the feasibility of this method and proposed a new product design idea.
