With the continuous development of science and technology and the deepening of the world economic integration, the product replacement time is getting shorter and shorter. It leads to the time from design to production and then to put into the market become more and more compact. If the enterprises want to make a breakthrough and take the opportunity in the fierce market competition, they must continuously introduce high-quality products to enhance their competitiveness. Fundamentally, the key to introduce high-quality products in a short time lies in product design. Product design includes new product development and existing product improvement. But no matter what kind of design, a systematic design method is needed to achieve a multiplier effect. Function Analysis is a product design method based on function. It can greatly promote the process of product design. TRIZ is a theory of inventive problem solving that can help designers to solve technical problems quickly. Therefore, the main research content of this paper is focused on how to combine Function Analysis with TRIZ to help existing product improvement and new product development.Firstly, the produce of TRIZ, theoretical system and the general process of TRIZ for solving problems were briefly reviewed. Four problem models of TRIZ and the corresponding problem solving tools were emphatically introduced. And then, the basic knowledge of Function Analysis, the general process for solving problems and some common methods of Functional Analysis were detailedly presented. Also, the shortcomings of those common methods were analyzed. So a certain theoretical basis for the following integration was provided based on the above. Next, the basis of integrating Function Analysis and TRIZ was analyzed, and then two product design routes for existing product improvement and new product design were put forward. In the first route, function&structure analysis was used to establish the existing product function model first. Then, the functions and structures of products that needed to be designed were determined according to user’s requirements. Finally, TRIZ was used to design new innovative structures of the functions or improving the existing structures. Thus, the existing product re-innovation design route based on function&structure analysis and TRIZ was established. In the second route, in view of the difficulty in modeling the new product function model, It was proposed to use similar product function model to modelling new product function model——function transference. And the key steps of function transference were given, including similar product acquisition, function& structure analysis of similar product, function generalization, function refinement, etc. After getting the function model of new product, TRIZ was used to design new innovative structures of each function. The overall scheme of new product thereby was obtained. Consequently, the new product innovation design based on function transference and TRIZ was establish. At last, these two design routes were applied to the re-innovation design of range hood and innovation design of toothpick automatic packaging machine. The two design routes were verified to be systematic, feasible and reasonable, which had certain significance to product innovation design.
