Tonggusibaxi Ancient City sites was announced by the State Council as the sixth national key cultural relics protection units in May2006. This site is located in the south of Tonggusibaxi farm, Aksu Prefecture,45km south of Xinhe County. It is one of the center sites which were controlled by Anxi Frontier Command in Tang Dynasty. This earthen site is huge and well preserved. It is a typical building ruins in Qiuci region with high historical, artistic and scientific values.Following the relevant requirements, such as Protection Regulations for Chinese Cultural Relics Sites (2004) and Law of the Peoples Republic of China on Protection of Cultural Relics (2002), field investigation and laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the present situation, environmental effect, construction techniques, the type of deterioration, and engineering properties of soil. Results indicate that the major problems of this site include salt injury, tamarisk footing, wind erosion, rain erosion, crack, collapse, biological and man-made destruction. Compacted soil specimens were consolidated with potasium silicate (PS) solution were tested to evaluate the capability against wind erosion and rain erosion for protection design. By analyzing the deterioration causes, this paper put forward reasonable advices on engineering protection.
