With the increasing demand for national economic development and the development and progress of science and technology, as well as a great development period’s coming of power industry in China’s energy construction. With the increasing requirements on sustainability, reliability for energy development, the national economic construction for high-quality, reliable and stable the majority of electricity power supply is becoming common users’requirement. In the past, staged the distance and overcurrent protection was often used in traditional multi-use-stage backup protection, and mostly from the local Information, protection actions between adjacent components were mainly relied on the cooperation of the default setting value to ensure the selectivity of protection action. The outstanding problems of this model are complex tuning between protections of adjacent elements, long delay of protection operation and the poor adaptive capacity.With the grid’s expanding of the scale ane the improving of the complexity, the tuning with traditional backup protection becomes increasingly difficult to adapt to anon-default changes of the grid structure or operating conditions. At present, the development of relay protection in China is quiet perfect, especially with the relay protection principle study, the primary backup protection device, operation management, and protection device manufacturing have reached a very high level and formed a complete system, which can effectively act as the "first line of defense" for the electric power system security to protect the security and stability of China’s power grid. However, with the strategy of " power transmission from west to east, power exchange between south and north, nationwide interconnection" in China, the handful of ultra-large-scale complex interconnected grid in the world is gradually forming, and the relay protection technology presents new challenges.The Wide Area Relaying Protection, which is based on wide-area and a wealth of information, is the effective research directions as a solution to the current problems of high voltage power grid protection. The achievement of the wide-area protection was provided technical support by the development of modern technology. Wide Area Protection System includes three functions:protection, security automatic control and emergency control. When a fault occurs, locate and classify fault location and fault type quickly through the wide area protection algorithm, and quickly remove it. The reasoning decisions of backup protection were completed by the wide-area intelligent protection devices to quickly jump out of fault, without needing delay, to constitute the "first line of defense." According to the division of engineering applications, WAN protection actually contains "three lines of defense" of a security emergency control, the relay function, which is the "first line of defense", is the base of the entire security emergency. Improving protection and response in adapting to complex power grid catastrophe performance through wide-area information and intelligence technology has an important significance for network security. Taking China’s actual situation into account, this paper argues that the basis of the entire security emergency control is the "first line of defense". Improving relay protection in adapting to complex power grid and responding to grid cataclysm by using of wide-area information and intelligent technology has an important significance for network security.In order to promote the application of engineering applications in protection area, this paper focused on improving the performance of high voltage power grid protection, and proposed the Limited WAN Intelligent Protection System based on Limited wide area network information and Integration of intelligent technology This article made an in-depth theoretical analysis and technical research from the aspects of the protection system structure, protected partition theory, protection trip strategies and intelligent protection algorithms. The implementation of the system will not only help to improve the level of protection of existing high-voltage power grid, but also will be an important part of how to adapt to smart grid development needs for the high-voltage grid relay protection.
