Water is the cradle of a city which also influences and restricts the development of a city. China’s high-speed urbanization unbalanced the natural water cycle, so that the city faced waterlogging, stormwater pollution and water shortage. With the expansion of cities, traditional municipal infrastructure has been unable to deal with the problems of urban stormwater which are more and more serious. It will cost a large area of land, a huge number of money to upgrading the municipal infrastructure; worse, it will probably exacerbate the water pollution and shortage. This traditional stormwater management has also been executed in foreign countries once, and after decades, a new theory called sustainable stormwater management has been proposed, which imitate the natural phenomenon of water cycle. Compared with the municipal infrastructure, sustainable stormwater management techniques not only cost less, perform better, but also bring a series of ecological and social benefits.Based on the literature research and field trips, the paper fully discusses the comprehensive application of sustainable stormwater management techniques in landscape architecture design; from the planning level to design level, from theory research to the case analysis.First of all, the paper introduces the commonly used sustainable stormwater management techniques in landscape design, and makes a comprehensive evaluation of the advantage and limitations of them in various aspects. And then summarizes the design principles of sustainable stormwater management techniques in type selection, positioning and quantitative aspects. Finally, based on foreign case and domestic projects, the paper analysis the integrated applications and benefits of sustainable rainwater management in different types of projects. This paper wishes to change the design concept and emphasis more on rain water quality, runoff control and water resource utilization based on the research in order to alleviate the urban stormwater problem and contribute to the development of sustainable stormwater management in landscape architecture.
