In the dissertation, fundamental concepts of partial discharge (PD) were introduced and methods about the detection of PD were discussed. Based on these, a novel digital PD detector was developed.First, the performance of various PD detectors, including analogy and digital ones, were analyzed and compared. Second, in light of the characteristics of PD signals as well as international standards, important technical specifications were determined. And finally, Complied with these technical specifications, three solutions were put forward, from which the best feasible was selected out and brought into effect. In the digital PD detector high speed data acquisition unit acted as the core, analogy signal conditioning unit as the front node acquiring PD data and personal computer as the service center processing raw PD data and showing the results in proper forms. Analogy signal conditioning circuit and high speed data acquisition unit were explicated in detail. After analyzing the hardware of the digital PD detector, the software was explained briefly.PD detector was based on digital signal processing technique, DSP high speed data acquisition technique, programmable amplifying and filtering technique. In comparison with an analogy PD detector, a digital one could have stronger functions with better performance. The detector developed by the author had been successfully applied to detect PD in GIS and transformer, with the results satisfactory. At the end of the dissertation, a systematical summary was given. Further work to the research was also pointed out.
