Propyl4-(2-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yloxy)benzylamino)benzoate (ZJ0273) is a new herbicide, which is derived from a precursor compound pesticide (a derivative of2-pyrimidinyloxy-N-aryl benzoate). Several applications of this new herbicide in the rape field were reported, but few about the other crops. In this study, wheat and barley were investigated to clarify the tolerance mechanism to ZJ0273stress with various physiological measurements, symptoms, biological and economic characters. In order to select the suitable dose of the herbicide, we conducted the experiments on wheat and barley in Taizhou from the year of2006to2007, and the results revealed as follows:1. The effect of ZJ0273on broadleaf and cereal weeds was greatest when the concentration was100mg/L, reaching the highest preventing effect of75%. It also revealed that the preventing effect of ZJ0273was better in earlier growth stage of weeds (2-3leaves) than that in later stage (4-5leaves).2. The tolerance of wheat was significantly higher than barley under the same concentration of the herbicide ZJ0273. The results showed that the growth of wheat and barely were both inhibited by ZJ0273, but the tolerance of wheat was higher than that of barley. ZJ0273applied in earlier stage of crop, its herbicide phytotoxicity could be relieved along with the plant growth. While, in jointing stage, the damage of herbicide to crop was more serious, and the crop perished after two months.3. Under the stress of herbicide ZJ0273applied at early stage, the plant height and dry weight per stem of wheat and barley were affected. No significant difference in1000-grain weight was observed, while the grain number of per ear was reduced. The tillering numbers per area and the effective ears were increased, and the biological and economic yields of treated crop were increased insignificantly.
