A Study On Rose Garden Design

Spreading out from Europe, a rose garden, or rosarium, is a garden or park which aims to grow and present various types of roses.It is of great value in terms of city landscape, scientific research, education etc. Combined with the advancement of economy and landscape industry, the number of rose gardens in China is growing at a staggering rate. Meanwhile, some considerable problems have emerged, e.g. the landscape of rose gardens is often monotonous and the ornamental values of roses have not been explored sufficiently. To tackle these problems, this thesis, have analyzed the ornamental value of different types of roses and the development process of rose gardens, and finally given effective measures to improve the landscape of rose gardens. Specifically, The main research outputs are as follows:(1)The history and culture of roses and their ornamental value have been well-explored. Rose, enjoying a long history in China, had formed its own cultural characteristics in aspects such as poetry, folk customs, cooking etc. In western countries, its cultural value is more prominent as rose is the symbol of love and peace, and has impotent meanings in Christian culture.(2)The trends of rose garden are predicted based on the study of rose garden’s developing process and analysis of differences between Chinese and foreign rose gardens. It has been found that the main differences are not in rosariums’number and scale, but in the ornamental and educational value. These distinctions can be due to many elements, e.g. history, culture, landscape and lifestyle.(3)The rose garden design theory is proposed. It is suggested to use abundant landscape forms to display the diverse ornamental characteristics of roses with focusing on the method of color scheme, configuration of florescence and fragrance. Besides, other landscape elements should be combined with rose to enrich the spaces and to form the diverse plant landscape.(4) A field survey of the rose garden in Beijing Botanic Garden has been conducted. Common varieties of roses and species of landscape plants have been recorded and its plan and arrangement has been analyzed, which will provide preferences for rose garden design, especially in northern areas in our country.
