Objective:To explore the expression of VEGF in papillary thyroid Carcinoma andmicrocarcinoma (incidental and non-incidental)and its Clinical Significance. Methods:We retrospectively analyzed135consecutive patients with papillary thyroidCarcinoma and microcarcinoma who underwent total thyroidectomy at our institutionduring2012;70of them were papillary thyroid Carcinoma and65of them werepapillary thyroid microcarcinoma. Among the latter,25of them were incidentalmicrocarcinoma and40of them were non-incidental. And,we randomly selected30normal thyroid tissue adjacent to carcinoma as the control group.Immunohistochemistry using Elivision method was carried out for assessment of theexpression of VEGF among papillary thyroid Carcinoma, incidentalmicrocarcinoma,non-incidental microcarcinoma and30normal thyroid tissueadjacent to carcinoma. Results:The positivity rates of VEGF in papillary thyroid Carcinoma (80.0%) andnon-incidental microcarcinoma(77.5%) were significantly higher than those inincidental microcarcinoma(16.0%) and normal thyroid tissue adjacent tocarcinoma(16.7%).But there was no statistical difference between papillary thyroidCarcinoma and non-incidental microcarcinoma or incidental microcarcinoma andnormal thyroid tissue adjacent to carcinoma. Moreover, we observe higher expressionof VEGF in patient with lymph node metastases than lymph node negative group, bothin papillary thyroid Carcinoma and non-incidental microcarcinoma. And we alsofound higher expression of VEGF in patient with extrathyroidal extension than tumor limited to the thyroid gland. Conclusion:The VEGF was increasingly expressed in papillary thyroid carcinoma andnon-incidental microcarcinoma. ImmunohistochemicaI.VEGF may play an importantrole in carcinogenesis, development, invasiveness, metastatic potential in papillarythyroid carcinoma and non-incidental microcarcinoma.ImmunohistochemicaIdetection of VEGF expression may carry clinical significance in evaluating theaggressive papillary thyroid carcinoma and microcarcinoma。...
