Research On The Standard Of Traditional Chinese Medicine Literature Metadata-based On The Dublin Core

Traditional Chinese medicine has developed for thousands of years, formed lots of schools of TCM, leaving many ancient literatures and modern literatures. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a precious heritage of Chinese cultural, and TCM literatures play a key position of cultural continuity. They recorded thousands years of physicians’ wisdom and medical experience. Facing a huge amount of literature resources, users need efficient knowledge retrieval and mining; literature managers have to carry out sorting work, rights management, resource evaluation, keeping them in a safe place. Chinese literatures have many background information in the process of their generation, transmission, storage and fading away, such as collection, modify, utilization, etc., many other aspects of their life cycle activities also contains a lot of information. The background information is equally as valuable as the contents of book. People dedicated to the research how can retrieval literatures according to demand, and return more accurate results as far as possible. Should not rely solely on the traditional search engines and use keywords to match, taking no account of semantics. The mechanical query will often return a blank, errors or undesirable results. Application of metadata is playing a significant role in promoting the solution of this problem.In October2008, Institute of Information on Traditional Chinese Medicine, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, began to participate the ISO/TC215standardization of traditional medicine, paid a close attention to the trend of the ISO/TC215standardization of traditional medical information, and submitted a standard proposal "Traditional Chinese Medicine Literature Metadata". The ISO/TC215 has started the voting procedure on the proposal of the TCMLM standards in November2011. May2012ISO officially approved this standard. This is the first project of TCM Information Standards unveiled in the ISO.The topic is start with the studies on design principles and develop method of Traditional Chinese Medical Literature Metadata Standard. Establish a complete set of Chinese medical literature metadata according to the principles and methods.First of all, complete a survey of standards developments for TCM. Make a survey of medical metadata research situation of domestic and foreign.Metadata standards that describe information resource include tradional literature description metadata-MARC and Internet data description metadata-DC. Medical information resource description metadatas include:ISO13119Health informatics-Clinical knowledge resources-Metadata, which developed by ISO Health Informatics Technical Committee; Ohio LINK metadata; MCM metadata; CISMeF, etc. These metadata all largely referred and reused DC.Retrieve academic database and Internet and find out the situation of medical metadata development inland. There are many research on metadata, but very little on the field of medical, much less on the field of TCM metadata. There is a lack of authorities to take the lead to public the TCM metadata standard officially, so that sharing of TCM information can’t go smoothly. Therefore, this research is necessary extremely.Secondly, analyze the purpose and meaning of the metadata standards in terms of TCM literature resource utilization and protection. Summarize the function of metadata. Analyze the reason why this metadata standard should be based on DC.TCM literatures are collected dispersedly. More than12,000kinds of Chinese literature currently scatteredly saved in the specialized libraries in our country, which dating back to before1949, is still treated as the museum’s greatest treasures and shelved.As an extension of the application of computer technology in the field of document management and the development of scanning technologies, the electronic processing of documents bring readers a great deal of reading convenience; Ancient Literature can be very well protected at the same time.In contrast to the development and utilization of literature information technology, the document using theoretical support is lagging behind.Standardization of metadata is an important part of the construction of document using theories. TCM literature metadata lay the foundation for the canonical description of the TCM literature resources. It helps to build a clear, comprehensive, simple, straightforward descriptive records of literature, and effectively support the collection, storage and use of TCM literature, improve the effect of traditional Chinese medical literature retrieval, for the deeply protect and use of traditional Chinese medical literature resources are of great significance.Thirdly, design the metadata framework, analyze the general principles and specific principles of metadata designing, and plan the procedure of designing the TCM metadata.According to the different perspective of descriptions of the TCM literature, divide the TCM literature metadata in7sections:●Identification section:basic information of external characteristics, including title, identifier, creator and publisher, etc. ●Content section:Descriptive Information of content, including description, Subject, etc.●Distribution section:Information about user’s access to literature resources.●Quality section:Quality Information about status of literature resources.●Constraint section:Constraint information contains access to and use of literature resources.●Maintenance section:Information on the maintenance of literature resources.●Relation section:Providing reference between data and related data.Fourthly, conduct an analysis of the resource; define some details about bibliographic object." Literature " is a broad concept; in addition to traditional Chinese medicine, other traditional medicine literature could also apply to this metadata; text and images of digital formats are together make up a record. They cannot be separated; the specific recording unit is to be determined as the actual need.Fifthly, complete designing all elements of TCM literature metadata, and present it in two forms:summary and dictionary. TCM literature metadata includes24elements. It retains DC’s elements, and adds some TCM literature distinctive elements.Reuse the DC elements, such as Title、Type、Creator、Subject、Description、 Date、Identifier、Language、Relation, etc,;Refine the DC metadata elements, for example, further refine "DC.title":title on the fore-edge, title on the inside cover, title on the book cover, title on the first page of text, and so on;Add some TCM literature distinctive elements such as Ancient Physicians,TCM School Of Thought, Data From.Sixthly, Select the appropriate computer labeling scheme.RDF (Resource Description Framework) is a markup language for describing web resources. RDF describes metadata to a data model through using XML syntax and RDF schema (rdfs).
