Objective:On the basis of investigating hand hygiene awareness of medical staff in stomatological clinics of "AAA" hospitals, public specialist stomatological hospitals and private dental clinics in Urumqi, this paper aims at learning about current awareness status on hand hygiene, hand hygiene compliance and its effect factors, thus to figure out preventive measures for clinical practice and provide scientific evidences for health administrations to train and supervise stomatological medical staff on hand hygiene matters in a more specific way. Method:228medical staffs, who have been engaged in stomatology work for more than one year, were taken from stomatological clinics of "AAA" hospitals, public specialist stomatological hospitals and private dental clinics, as respondents. Field investigation and questionnaires are adopted in this research to learn about dental medical staffs’awareness on hand hygiene, hand hygiene compliance and its effect factors. Results:1) Public hospitals do a better job in training, publicity and education on hand hygiene, while suggesting private hospitals’inadequate publicity work on this issue.2) Concerning hand hygiene knowledge and use of disposable gloves, medical workers from public hospitals also have a better understanding than those from private hospitals, most of who know only less than90%about correct hand washing.3) Among all the respondents,93.13%of public hospitals’dental health staffs can master the six-step hand-washing method properly, while the rate of private hospitals is61.86%. As to the length of hand washing time, the former wash hands only87.02%as long as the required time, while the later only39.18%.4) In public health institutions, think the main factor of hand hygiene compliance is the reducing frequency of hand washing caused by the uses of disposable gloves, and that large quantity of work causes time deficiency is thought to be the second. But to medical staffs from private hospitals, lack of effective supervision mechanism is considered as the main factor, inadequate attention to hand hygiene the second. Conclusion:In Urumqi, adequate training and publicity work has been carried out in public hospitals properly; meanwhile hand hygiene knowledge and correct use of disposable gloves are basically mastered, except for some points, e.g. hand hygiene execution under different indications, where stricter supervision and management are needed. While in private stomatological hospitals both hand hygiene awareness and hand hygiene compliance are evidently inadequate and insufficient. So measures should be taken, including building effective supervision mechanism, strengthening management and training, improving hand hygiene facilities and enhancing the occupational ethic education, to improve the current hand hygiene situation and compliance of medical staffs in private stomatological hospitals.
