The causes of mental disorder are so complicated that as so far, pathogenies of many diseases are still unknown. As diseases vary, their manifestations are also different, patients suffer from serious mental diseases can be short of insight to the diseases, some patients will even have mental disabilities.mental diseases also can put family and society in danger, they are considered as the most destructive diseases harmful to human beings.Types and treatments of mental diseases have also changed accompany the development of science and technology. Those which have a closer connection with the pressure of life seemed to increase. Although Psychotherapy,MECT and some new physical treatments are being widely used in clinical practice. in some places, surgeries are still being operated, we have to conclude that medication is still the primary method for most mental diseases. Western medicine used to treat mental diseases for only less than a hundred years. During this period psychiatric drugs are constantly increasing.New drugs constantly emerge and old drugs are updated. Overall, the development is significant. In Researches regard to etiologies of mental diseases, there is a simple hypothesis, that mental disorder is caused by overabundance or deficiency of some central neurotransmitter. This hypothesis has greatly stimulated the development and clinical application of drugs which can influnce these neurotransmitters. The development of modern medicine in neurobiology and gene level has also bring overwhelmingly progress in psychiatric pharmacology field. To develop new drugs to cure certain target symptoms is no longer a dream. In this paper,I arranged a large number of reference resources associated with drug and treatment of mental diseases Through both ancient and modern literatures,I got the inspiration that, Many old drugs tend to gradually disappear, as new ones emerge. For example, the first-generation antipsychotics tend to retire, as the second-generation antipsychotics become the main choice for most clinicians.Tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants are gradually being replaced by new antidepressants. Anti anxiety drugs changed little, although clinical application increased. New psychiatric drugs constantly improve efficacy while avoiding many side effects of old drugs, but many new adverse reactions are constantly being discovered as time extends.Risk of recurrence in some mental diseases doesn’t reduce becauseof using new drugs.Decline of social function in severe patients,is still not controlled well, to find ideal drugs and treatments,is still our major goal.In Chinese medicine, mental diseases are categoried to emotional diseases, and the treatments already have a history of thousand years. these are precious heritage left from our ancestors. Now traditional chinese medicine start to integrate with modern medicine and technology.Analysis on effective components of traditional chinese medicine promote the development of pharmacology in traditional chinese medicine. Which can also make Chinese medicine treatment more and more scientific and internationalized.According to both clinical practice and research, Chinese medicine shows a fairly good effect in treatment of mild mental disorder, in serious diseases such as negative symptom in schizophrenia, Chinese medicine also shows an unique effect. These are enough to make us to believe that, Chinese medicine will have a broad prospect in psychiatric clinic.
