Persistent vegetative state(PVS), is a state in which a patient is in awareness butnocognition in the course of recovering from coma, and a state that the leval ofconsciousness departs from the content of consciounsness. As the development of societyand economic, it’s morbility is rising, it does great harm to human health. Modern medicinestudies deeply about PVS and gets many methods of diagnosis and treatment, but the effectis not content. If traditional Chinese medicine can play it’s role, which determines thetreatment based on differentiation of symptoms and signs, it will elevate the therapeuticeffect of PVS patients and reduce some side effect. There have been some scholars who trytraditional Chinese medicine on PVS patients and get some effect. Differentiation ofsymptoms and signs for classification of syndrome is a cognition that represent the rules oftraditional Chinese medicine, it is a important prerequisite for Chinese medicine to elevateit’s effect. Most of the TCM types of PVS passed are experiences summary of some doctorindividuals, it can not constract a unified type standard that can guide the clinic. Our study uses clinical epidemicological method, according to PVS’s features, designsa investigation table of TCM patterns of syndrome based on collecting four TCM physicalexaminations. Later, according to a definitive standard, from March 2005 to September2006, we investigate 102 random PVS samples of Nanjing Zhijin Hospital, then record allthe four TCM physical examination data and Westen medical data. Next step, we do thedifferentiation of symptoms and signs on the basis of the information of four TCM physicalexaminations, finally ten TCM types of syndrome are ascertained, and furtherly wedescribe the distribution of the TCM types of PVS and it’s influencing factors. Results: Wethink that the pathergenesis is brain vascular arthralgia and the upper orifices block on thephenomenon that the 102 PVS cases have a common symptom of being cona and notcarrying out an order. They are all in all weak. There are six main TCM syndrome types:deficiency of vital energy and blood stasis, hemopenia and wind acting, sputum and fevershutting the orifice, deficiency of both the heart and spleen, phlegmatic hygrosis blockingthe orifice, and deficiency of kidney-essence. The six types include 98 cases, the number ofeach type is 32 cases (31.37%)、24 cases (23.53%)、17 cases (16.67%)、11 cases(10.78%)、8 cases (7.84%)、6cases (5.88%)。Men are more than women in our group of PVS cases, the ratio of male and female is 1:0.59. Analysis of the relation of age, asthenia and sthenia of TCM type and the diseaseposition shows certain general inner rule which totally fits TCM theory. Our study exploresthe rudiment rule of the distribution of PVS TCM syndromes and it’s influencing factors, and set up a primary standard of PVS TCM syndromes. It is a syndrome and pathogenesisbase for PVS treatment. This essay gives further analysis of the character and basic prescription of each ofthefrequent six types of PVS TCM syndrome, such as: 1. deficiency of vital energy and bloodstasis, using Buyanghuanwu Decoction. 2. hemopenia and wind acting, giving Decoctionof Eight Ingredients. 3. sputum and fever shutting the orifice, practicing Decoction forClearing Away Gallbladder Heat. 4. cardiosplenic asthenia; exerting Decoction forInvigorating the Spleen. 5. phlegmatic hygrosis blocking the orifice, executing Decoctionof six Ingredients. 6. deficiency of kidney-essence, employing yougui pill. This analysisgives guide for doctors to diagnose and treat PVS.
