This article mainly analyzes and discusses the traditional Chinese freehandbrushwork painting in the contempary diversifying context of Chinese oil painting. Inview of its development background in China, the present situation of freehandbrushwork in China is explored within the Chinese traditional concept of meaningfulfreehand painting and related painting theories.The relationship between “writing” and“meaning” in freehand brushwork is further discussed and testified, in order to enrichand promote the construction and study of Chinese freehand brushwork theories, todirect the practical work of freehand brushwork in a better way, and to inherit anddevelop this excellent Chinese culture of pursuing “heaven and men harmony”.This article is generally divided into the following five parts:Part one is an introduction to the background of freehand brushwork in traditionalChinese painting and its development in China. This part is aimed at illustrating thevery beginning background of freehand brushwork appearance and the spirit need underthe influence of Chinese traditional culture. Part II presents the present situation of thetraditional Chinese freehand brushwork development in China, and analyzes its presentlook and problems with an emphasis on the theoretical and practical aspects oftraditional Chinese freehand brushwork, thus to put forward the demand to furtherpromote the development of freehand brushwork in traditional Chinese painting.Part IIIillustrates “writing” in Chinese traditional culture from the four aspects of writing brush,writing paint, writing shape and writing object in traditional Chinese freehandbrushwork painting. With representative works on "writing" freehand brushwork intraditional Chinese painting, their performance and application of “writing” arediscussed. Part IV interprets the definition of “meaning”from the Chinese traditionalculture (mainly Taoist thought), which highly advocates the use of “meaning” inpainting. Taking representative works as examples, the construction of “meaning” infreehand brushwork is studied from the three aspects of image, conception andconnotation. Part V, as "writing" and "meaning" is related, mainly summarizes thefreehand brushwork in traditional Chinese painting in the "writing" and "meaning"relationship, pointing out their interdependence and complementation. At the same time,the traditional Chinese freehand brushwork in present China has redefined and furtherexpanded the concept of “meaning”. On the other hand, this article puts forward some humble points of view in traditional Chinese freehand brushwork painting, in the hopeof leading freehand brushwork in traditional Chinese painting in China towards ahealthy direction of development.
