This paper chooses Bai Xianyong’novels as the research’s object, and the imageof the Other as the breakthrough point. This paper analyzes the Images of the Nativeof Taiwan and the Image of the Foreigner in Bai Xianyong’novels on the theory ofimagology and narratolgy.First, subdivide the Image of the Native into the image of clown and the image ofthe reduced, and analyze them respectively: the image of clown presents some imageform of the natives in mainlander’s eyes at that time, reflects the biases mainlanderderived from geographic populations; the image of the reduced presented the natives’common tragic fate, and is referred to as a mainlander’s tragic fate mapping, reflectsBai Xianyong’s general sympathy and compassion for the natives, and the author’sfatalism.Secondly, Divided the Image of the Foreigner into three stages, analyze themrespectively: most of the foreigners’ image in the1960s’ novels show a negativeimage, mapping the author on the question of American culture, from thepsychological; Foreigners’ image in the1970s’ novel become a kind image of goodwife, reflects that the writer’s attitude towards American culture is open and keep;Foreigner’s image in the21stcentury’s novels turned into the gay community, reflectsthe writer’s cosmopolitan perspective toward gay and lesbian subculture.Through the analysis of the two image series, we learn about the Bai Xianyong’screation mentality to write the Image of the Other, as well as a writer for hisnation/culture of different thinking.
